Mission

The mission of Discover Black Florida is to inspire and engage the public to explore Florida's diverse history. This website offers readers a listing of African-American historic sites, annual heritage festivals and events, black history organizations, research collections and black history scholars throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota, Manatee, Polk, Pasco and Charlotte Counties. Though the present focus of Discover Black Florida is the Tampa Bay region, this growing project will eventually cover all regions of the state.

The purpose of this website is to help Florida visitors and guests experience a sense of place; that is a sense of pride, ownership, attachment, and stewardship that will help preserve and protect cultural history in the state. By retrieving and documenting this history, we seek to honor and promote Florida's African-American cultural heritage, to continue building on these historic records, and to preserve this history for future generations.
