Description
According to the book, The Historic Places of Pasco County, the settlement lasted for only one generation, being abandoned following the Great Citrus Freeze of 1894-1985. Little traces of the community exist, including former log cabins and a cemetery. The area is mostly overrun by citrus groves, but a historic marker now distinguishes the former Black settlement.
Following the Great Freeze, Mt. Zion AME Church was formed in Dade City by members of Freedtown's African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church and congregation are active to this day.
Current land owners are Evans Properties, Inc. and Sandbar Groves, Inc.
