Welcome Letter from Vickie O!

You have come to a valuable place, a site that has resulted from an exciting and exhilarating (sometimes exhausting, too!) journey by a dedicated band of researchers, historians, community activists, and friends. From here, with just a keystroke, you may access fascinating information about important black historic sites and festivals, as well as facts about scholars, organizations, and research collections in the Tampa Bay area that are relevant to an interest in African American history and heritage.

My hope is that this website will spark in Florida residents and other travelers to this site a greater sense of pride, ownership, and stewardship of the place that we call home. The preservation of historic buildings, districts, sites, and objects looms as fundamental to understanding the present and our future. Newcomers, please use this resource additionally as a roadmap to the rich history of the many and varied black communities in the Sunshine State. I promise that you’re about to be surprised.

Now, by all means, Discover Black Florida!
